“After the conquest of the South Pole by Amundsen (…), there remained but one great main object of Antarctic journeying — the crossing of the South Polar continent from sea to sea.” –Ernest Shackleton
The Ball Engineer III Endurance 1917 TMT, reference NT2222C-S3C-GRC, pays tribute to Sir Ernest Shackleton and his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917, bearing the name of his ship — the Endurance.
Shackleton’s legacy faded after his final expedition and his death in 1922, but his leadership in the Antarctic has since been rediscovered and is now widely admired. After the Endurance was crushed by pack ice, he and five men endured unimaginable conditions to bring help to the stranded main party, and in the end every member was rescued without a single loss of life.
In the same spirit of resilience, this modern explorer’s watch has a 904L stainless steel case, an alloy richer in chromium, molybdenum, nickel and copper than the 316L steel used in most watches, making it more resistant to seawater corrosion, extreme temperatures and acids. Ball’s patented Amortiser system adds further protection against the shocks of adventure.
The watch’s standout feature is a patented mechanical thermometer that reads temperatures between -35°C and 45°C (-31°F and 113°F), shown on the sunburst green dial in Celsius. The dial also carries Ball’s signature baton indices, lit by self-powered micro gas tubes filled with tritium (H3). These tubes initially glow up to 100 times brighter than Super-LumiNova and keep shining for around 25 years without needing to be charged by light.
Beneath a solid caseback decorated with an image of the Endurance and an inscription honoring Shackleton beats the Ball caliber RR1601-C, a chronometer version of the esteemed ETA 2892-A2 automatic movement. Notably, the movement is lubricated with a specialized oil that keeps it running reliably anywhere from a frigid -40°C to a scorching +60°C.
