Cartier Santos Galbée ref. W20056D6

$3,700.00

This Santos Galbée carries the legacy of the world's first pilot's watch into a softer, more wearable form for slender wrists, rendered in stainless steel with a quartz movement.

The Cartier Santos is one of the most historically significant wristwatches ever created, tracing its origins to 1904 when Louis Cartier designed a timepiece for aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. Conceived so that Santos-Dumont could read the time without removing his hands from the controls of his aircraft, it is widely regarded as both the first pilot’s wristwatch and the first men’s wristwatch. Its distinctive square case, defined by clean lines, defined angles, and exposed screws, marked a bold departure from the round watches that dominated the era.

The Santos became a favorite among Cartier's clientele after its public release in 1911, but it was not until 1978 that Cartier introduced a fully redesigned, non-precious metal Santos in steel, reflecting a new commercial philosophy as luxury became accessible to a broader market. The next major evolution arrived in 1987 with the debut of the Santos Galbée, a softer and more ergonomic interpretation powered by a quartz movement that would define the collection for decades to come and help carry the brand through the quartz crisis. Named after the French word galbée, meaning “curved,” the design introduced smoother lines and a gently arched profile that sits more elegantly on the wrist while preserving the watch’s unmistakable industrial character.

The Santos Galbée reference W20056D6 exemplifies this celebrated model in a ladies' configuration, featuring a stainless steel case measuring 34.8mm by 26.2mm. Cartier's familiar signatures remain intact, including an ivory-toned silvered dial with Roman numerals and a chemin de fer (“railway”) minute track, blued-steel sword-shaped hands, and a seven-sided steel crown set with a faceted synthetic spinel. It is completed by an integrated-style bracelet with a series of exposed screws running through the links, echoing those on the bezel.
