The PAM00023 is a neo-vintage Luminor distinguished by design elements unique to Panerai's formative years.
The Panerai Luminor GMT PAM00023 stands as one of the brand's earliest GMT references, marking a significant chapter in Panerai's watchmaking history. As a first-generation “A series” model, this watch was produced in 1998, the year of Panerai's modern commercial launch following its acquisition by the Vendôme Group (now Richemont) in 1997.
The watch retains the now-iconic Luminor silhouette with a substantial 44mm cushion-shaped case that incorporates the brand's signature lever-locking crown guard and pronounced, chunky lugs. Its solid black dial preserves the brand's hallmark minimalism, combining tritium lume with large Arabic numerals at the cardinal points and baton markers in between, along with a magnified date window at 3 o'clock.
Yet the PAM00023 breaks from later Luminor models through several distinctive design choices. Shared only with the PAM00029, its bezel features engraved Arabic numerals in a layout reminiscent of the Rolex Explorer II — a design Panerai has not revisited since. Additionally, the broad, skeletonized sword-shaped hands echo the aesthetic of Panerai's Submersible line rather than the solid swords typical of the Luminor family, paired with a lollipop-style seconds hand.
Inside this Luminor is the ETA 2893-2, built on the renowned ETA 2892-A2 as a base, with an added GMT complication module.

This watch is in good condition, showing moderate wear from regular use, including scratches, scuffs, nicks, and dents. The bezel most notably has a gouge near the 6 marker, along with denting next to the 14 marker. The lug-to-lug measurements are very slightly asymmetrical between the two sides (53.2mm vs. 53.3mm). The leather strap shows clear signs of age and use, such as peeling around the edges, but remains fully intact and wearable. The movement is running properly with all functions operating as intended, though its service history is unknown. Additional photos and timegrapher results are available on request.
