Seiko Spring Drive ref. SNS001, complete set

$2,700.00

The SNS001 stands as both the culmination of decades of innovation and one of the earliest and rarest expressions of Seiko's Spring Drive.

Seiko’s invention of the Spring Drive technology stands as one of the most revolutionary achievements in the history of watchmaking. Its origins trace back to Christmas Day of 1969, when Seiko unveiled the Astron, the world's first quartz watch, igniting a revolution that rendered mechanical watches nearly obsolete and redefined what accuracy in timekeeping could mean. From that point forward, traditional mechanical watchmaking became admired largely for its craftsmanship and ingenuity rather than its precision, as quartz movements proved both more accurate and less costly to produce at scale.

Yet Seiko, founded in 1881 under Kintaro Hattori's guiding philosophy to be "always one step ahead of the rest," would inevitably pursue a movement capable of uniting mechanical tradition with quartz precision. The Spring Drive concept was first conceived in 1977 by Yoshikazu Akahane at Suwa Seikosha, but development was methodical and patient: the first prototype arrived in 1982, with more refined iterations following in 1993 and 1997, before the technology finally made its formal public debut at the 1998 Basel Fair.

The result was a groundbreaking hybrid mechanism that uses a traditional mainspring while regulating time through an electronic glide wheel controlled by a quartz oscillator. This unique system delivers exceptional accuracy alongside the smooth, continuous sweep of the seconds hand — a defining characteristic of all Spring Drive watches. To commemorate this milestone, Seiko released hand-wound Spring Drive models retailing exclusively in Japan, each offering 48 hours of power reserve.

Building on that foundation, Seiko continued its relentless pursuit of improvement, initiating development of automatic Spring Drive calibers beginning in 1999. In 2005, the automatic calibers 5R64 and 5R65 were completed and went on to power the first Spring Drive watches released to the global market. These calibers represented a substantial leap forward, delivering a full 72 hours of power reserve and incorporating Seiko's ingenious Magic Lever bi-directional automatic winding system.

The reference SNS001 was part of the global launch of Spring Drive, powered by the 5R64 caliber and featuring a vertically textured silver dial with subdials for running seconds and a power reserve indicator. Its polished sub-41mm case is crafted from stainless steel, with a sculpted profile defined by stepped horizontal layers along the sides and thick beveled lugs. The watch is paired with a brown crocodile leather strap and its original steel pin buckle, signed “Spring Drive.”

  • This watch is in good condition, showing expected wear from normal use including scratches, scuffs, and dings. In particular, there is a noticeable dent on the bottom left lug as shown in pictures 24 and 25. The movement is running properly with all functions operating as intended, though its service history is unknown. There is some small debris visible beneath the caseback, though it does not appear to affect the movement’s operation. The (possibly original) leather strap shows obvious signs of use, including some discoloration and deterioration, though it remains fully usable. Additional photos are available on request.

  • This watch comes as a complete set with its original SNS001-stickered outer box, Spring Drive DVD, certificate of authenticity, instruction booklet, warranty booklet, and blank warranty card.

As shown in the photos, the outer box is included but not the inner presentation box that is used to store the watch. The watch will be shipped in a generic box.
